Malcolm Chase – Hawaii Lacrosse Dreaming

Editor’s Note: As he does every year, Malcolm Chase is joining LAS to write about his experiences at the annual Hawaii Lacrosse tournament. This year, Malcolm is taking on us on his pre-journey voyage, and showing us how he preps for Hawaii with Wimmer Solutions, where he plays Masters AND Men’s Elite! The “old man” has still got it, and I can guarantee he’s probably in MUCH better shape than you are! Hawaii Lacrosse Dreaming never gets old, even if we eventually do! Ok Malc, take it away!

Hawaii Lacrosse Dreaming – October 18, 2016

Aloha All Stars! I say this from my Boston-area home on the mainland because I am already feeling the aloha spirit, just 9 days out from the Hawaii Lacrosse Tournament. My training and nutrition has been sharpening over the last month as I prepare to run double-duty for the Wimmer Solutions Elite and Master’s squads for the 6th year in a row!

Hawaii and Wimmer post-game

Alright Alright Alright… I keep getting older, and these elite players stay the same age . At this point, I’m like a slightly less creepy McConaughey (I hope), but I still could not be more excited to tear up the island with some of my best friends, and some of the best players in the game.

This year I will provide as many photos and info as I can in a timely manner, so that my boy Connor Wilson can get it out to you via LAS. MY MISSION is to convince as many of you as possible to A) come to Hawaii and play in this tournament at least once, if not many times throughout your career, and B) to draw attention and ask you to consider supporting the causes that we (Wimmer Solutions), as well as our competitors, and the tournament, support. Be on the lookout for more ways to support some good causes in future Hawaii posts!

hawaii_JAPANThere is no greater gift than being able to give back through playing the game that you love. In so many ways, Lacrosse is and will always be The Medicine Game.

That said, here is my workout from last night. I am playing for Prime Time in the Boston Box Lacrosse League, which may be the most experienced box lacrosse league in the country. Baltimore guys, I know you are doing great work down there as well. Guess we may have to have an all star game for bragging rights. Just make sure you are doing more than 12oz curls to prepare.

Hawaii Lacrosse Dreaming – October 21, 2016

Busy. Busy. Busy. It’s always busy leading up to the trip. My girlfriend Jessica and I work ourselves to the bone, knowing that once we land on Oahu, it will all be worth it. I’m meeting with as many athletes as possible before I leave. Many of them have recruiting tournaments while I am away so it is important that we key in on their strengths and that they show well.

We won our box game Tuesday vs. the Pink Whales in the BBLL. We built a nice lead to hold off a furious comeback attempt in the second half. Our goalie Karl stood on his head and gave us a shot against an arguably more experienced team. Happy to be a part of one more team win prior to heading out on our Hawaii mission.

We have a wedding in Maine tomorrow for my good friend Lauren Reid. She was and is still an awesome player from Portland, who played at UMass and coached at USM and Bates. She still runs the Maineiax girls program and is growing the game the right way back in my (and her!) home state.

So if you are a meathead like me, you always consider how events and schedule changes will affect your training. I want to get on the road out of Boston pretty soon so I am grabbing a quick session before I leave RPM Athlete Performance today. Here are the nuts and bolts:

-wall ball, jump rope warmup
– foam rolling, band and core activation, hip/shoulder mobility
– shooting/footwork, continue to break in the new NB Freeze cleats I am so pumped to rip around in next weekend
– Box Jumps – Deadlifts – SLDL w/KB (barefoot)
– PUSH: BB Bench w/Chains – Med Ball Pushups w/weight vest
– PULL: Pullups (maybe mix in a few MuscleUps) – DB Rows
– TRX Knee Tucks – Side Plank Rows
-Good Mornings

Here’s a peak at a few of these moves in action…

VIDEO: medicine-ball-push-up

There are small medicine balls under each of my hands during this push-up set. What can I say, I am an above average trainer with below average videography skills, but trust me, the med balls are there!

October 24, 2016

It’s a bye week for the 1-1 Penguins in the BBLL this week. Therefore, it is up to me to get my feet moving and ready to traverse the natural grass terrain on Oahu. It is equally important to “feed the machine!” and fuel the next four workouts, as well as the recovery from these challenges. This morning, as I wrap up my last few lines on the next installment of GET REPS for New England Lacrosse Journal, I am preparing an easy but effective first meal:

  • Instant Oatmeal with brown sugar and added oat bran
  • 2 scrambled eggs
  • 2 generous spoonfuls of peanut butter
  • Left over half of Clif Bar

This will rev the engine. In my next post, I will recap the training session and see if I can shoot a video that includes all of the equipment/exercise featured… It’s almost Hawaii Lacrosse time. I can feel it!
