It’s Wednesday, so you know it’s your weekly Skaggs session. This time around, let’s talk about the stick I did for The Rivers School.
The Rivers School placed an order and it was a custom field stick. At first, I wasn’t sure about it. I’m going to be very honest about that. We get a lot of custom pocket orders coming our way. For anyone who doesn’t know, I used to be a partial owner and work at Styli’n Strings for… well, since I was 14. When you get a custom order, you’re always on edge. You keep saying to yourself, “How is this thing going to turn out?”
We do have a custom builder on the website and I encourage you to check that out. You can change the colors, and there’s all sorts of cool stuff. Even with that, I really didn’t see their vision. So, I passed this stick off to madman Rich with hope of a miracle.
When it came out the other side, I was blown away by the color scheme. Basically, this bootlace and red just kind of meshed really well. It was the oranges and the browns in the bootlace playing off of the browns in the leather and the lighter browns in the wood that really made it pop.
They got a lot of good engravings on it, and the engravings really dug in well just because that particular piece of wood was a little softer than some of the other pieces of hickory. That whole process is kind of controlled by the actual stalk of wood itself. So, the laser can only do what it does, and it burns into the subject matter, and the subject matter happened to be slightly softer, meaning the engraving took really really well.
I mean, overall, it’s just a stunning piece. Coming from, you know, a position of skepticism.
I love this stick, so I thought I’d bring it out to you guys, hoping you guys like it as much as I do. If you guys ever need anything custom strung, you can play around with the custom builders online.
Until next time, take care. Keep laxin’.
