Lacrosse in Uganda? You Betcha! Thanks to Fields of Growth, a ton of volunteers, and most importantly, a number of motivated athletes in Uganda, lacrosse is now a reality in at least one corner of Africa. Larry Mackey has been over in Kampala coaching, living and giving for the past two weeks and is coming back soon. We’re excited to hear what he has to say about the experience!
We also got a quick update from Ibra, the captain of the Ugandan Men’s team, about some of the recent events and progressions, including Beach Lacrosse:
Sarah has been here coaching and she was able to help us with transition offence greatly, which has improved our game. For both the girls and the boys, passing and catching was important, as was helping the girls with team spirit building.
Larry has done a very terrific job with polishing our basics right from the start. For example we have worked a lot on passing and catching, ground balls, stick handling, shooting, improving more on team discipline (e.g team work, listening to coaches), and most importantly, building morale torwards DREAM 14!!!
Beach Lacrosse was a surprise to everyone, even coarch Larry himself, but we had a good start, and we got big numbers of players to come out. Over 20 boys and 14 girls made the trip, and all drills were done fine on the sand, like passing and catching. Team coordination was at its best, and what I liked most of all was that Larry was playing too. People at the beach liked the game; watching us play all day. I have attached some pics before the other players arrived of me and some of the girls. I’ll send over more soon!
Awesome stuff, Ibra! Sounds like lacrosse is really flourishing in Kampala. Keep up the great work!
