Welcome to the first-ever installment of my new passion project, the Woodshop Series. Seinfeld has done a great job of rolling around in fancy cars, sipping java, and shooting the breeze with all kinds of comedians and generally-famous people. The talks are great, the content is valuable, and both parties seem to always enjoy themselves. But… I like lacrosse, building things, and hanging out with likeminded people. So my guests come to my shop, build a Twig or two, and we share anything that comes to mind that day.
Some of my guests will be household lacrosse names, others a little lesser-known. Everyone was chosen for a reason and they all have a unique story to tell as I help them carve up their first wooden lacrosse sticks.
My first guest in the woodshop today is Chris Deal. Chris is the String League Season 3 Champion and arguably one of the most dominant players to ever join the league. You probably know him by his Instagram tag, @Dealy44. He’s a stringer’s stringer, so if anybody out there is making pockets, they definitely know what Chris Deal is up to.
Chris resides in Hawaii (I know, right?!), but he has his roots in South Jersey and Philadelphia. So, while he was back on the mainland for LaxCon, I had him over to the shop to show the String League champion how to make a stick.
Also, we let him get a little crazy and creative so we can give this stick away for all the LaxAllStars fans. If you’d like to win the giveaway, click here and follow the instructions on the @LaxAllStars Instagram.
We dug through the large bundle of mesh I’ve collected over the years, and Chris chose a piece of limited edition Breast Cancer Awareness Mesh made from East Coast Dyes a few years ago.
If you’re fortunate enough to win this stick, you’ll win something that’s absolutely one of a kind, and that I’ll never be able to reproduce myself. Good luck getting your hands on a piece of that mesh.
Woodshop Series: Chris Deal, Sandwich Chat
Justin Skaggs: So you’re from Philly, right?
Chris Deal: I’m from Southern New Jersey, but if there’s a city I identify with the most, it’s Philadelphia. People are very confused by that sometimes, but I’ve grown up mostly a Philadelphia sports fan my entire life.
JS: Since you’re a Philly guy, can you explain the hierarchy of Philly sandwiches?
CD: John’s Roast Pork is definitely [one] you have to go to. I like Dalessandro’s, and if you’re going to try one of the two main guys, I’m a Pat’s guy if I have to choose. I think Geno’s just spends too much money on their lights and not enough money on their food.
“I came by the woodshop today. Skaggs helped me learn a really, really cool craft that I’ve always wanted to see for myself, and in Dealy fashion, I’ve gotta put the BCA ECB wax mesh in there from a few years ago. Pretty nifty.” – Chris Deal
