The weather was beautiful, the lacrosse fields were plentiful, and the community vibe was in full effect, as 19 men’s and women’s lacrosse teams descended on Southampton High School for the Fourth Annual CityLax Southampton Shootout.
The Shootout is a charity tournament that benefits CityLax, Inc, a not for profit organization in New York City, which promotes the growth of lacrosse in public schools. (Editor’s Note: In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that the author is a CityLax volunteer.)
Some of the participating teams included Tufts Alumni, Harvard Alumni, Amherst/Yale Alumni, Streaker Sports, Jagermeister, ULax, Central LC, The Diablos, Budmen, Vineyard Vines, UnCommon Fit and many more. CityLax also teamed up with LaxAllStars.com to enter a team, which featured a healthy mix of LAS readers and CityLax program graduates.
The competition out on Long Island was good, and some of the games got decidedly intense. There is no championship at the Shootout, and this results in some interesting results. Some teams take it seriously, while others are purely there to have a good time. Overall, the atmosphere is always fun, and you’re sure to see some impressive play.
The CityLax squad went 2-1 on the day, although in the last game we had to give Harvard 5-6 of our own guys because some of their team disappeared early… so actually, we’ll take the 3-0 record. I’d like to thank EVERYONE who made it out to play with us! It was a great day of lacrosse, and I think some new lasting friendships were made. It was also great to see the ArtofLax’s baby. Man, that kid got big FAST! Next great NYC lacrosse product? I think so!
There was also a beach party afterwards, and if you are staying out in the Hamptons, the party is a fantastic way to wrap up the day!
If your team is interested in playing in the 2013 Southampton Shootout, reach out to CityLax NOW… this is quickly turning into a MUST-ATTEND event. One day, wonderful end to the Summer scene, and all for a great cause. It doesn’t get any better.
