How Does Canada Lacrosse Grow The Game?

As the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship 2015 moves even closer, we ask each nation exactly how they Grow The Game on home soil. These interviews reveal how each of the WILC nations work to not only grow the strengths of their national team, but how they are working to grow lacrosse throughout their country.

Now it’s time to look at the growth in Canada lacrosse. We asked Canadian Lacrosse Association organizersto share some ways Canada is excelling at growing the game, and the steps lacrosse in Canada can take to make a larger impact.

And, lacrosse is generating a lot of attention nation wide with our national teams currently holding the world title in three of the five FIL international championships.

What steps are being taken to grow the game locally in Canada? What are some of the long-term goals for future growth?

The growth of the game is seen through the work that our provincial Member Associations are doing to grow within their regions.

Through the support of our funding partners such as Canada’s Government and Sport Canada, we work with our Member Associations to provide and develop programs and resources that will help grow the game.

Recent success of our national teams (2014 Senior Men’s Field and 2015 U19 Women’s Field) has definitely caused a surge of interest in the sport as more young kids are being shown the talent and skill of lacrosse athletes and how we compete internationally.

Are there any opportunities for volunteers to get involved with the growth of the game in Canada? If so, where can one find more information?

There are always opportunities for volunteers to get involved in the game from coaching, to officiating, to administration; the first step for anyone interested is to contact their Member Association.

A list of member associations with contact information can be found at on the Canadian Lacrosse Association’s website!

What steps are being taken by Canada to elevate the national talent pool?

The Canadian Lacrosse Association runs all five of their national teams through our national team program which has a chairman and three national team directors: one for Indoor, one for Men’s Field and one for Women’s Field, who are all amazing lacrosse leaders and visionaries.

These leaders (chairman and directors) work with each national team staff and the national organization to develop a system of identifying talent, and work towards a nation wide development plan that includes working with the Member Associations and their development systems.
