MCLA Fan Upset of the Week

With the MCLA season a few weeks in, we are starting to form a good picture of who will be a top dog and who will have to fight for every scrap they can get. Beginning this week, through the end of the regular season, we will pick one major upset for each division in the MCLA, then ask you which upset you think will be most likely to happen.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Last week I went 1-1 in my upset picks. I can’t say I was super surprised to see Colorado State pull out the big victory. As I pointed out in the post, Michigan State was full of question marks and that game did, in fact, help put a picture together of how they will be this year.

On the MCLA D2 side of things, Liberty helped me get back to .500 with a strong performance against GVSU and a 15-7 victory to put the Flames up to 8-0 on the season and #8 in the nation.

On to week two!

MCLA D1

One of the other match-ups I put on upset alert last week was Grand Canyon vs. BYU. I think Grand Canyon is a dark horse this year and will be surprising some teams throughout the season. They are currently 5-3 on the season and ranked at #21. Their three losses are all to ranked opponents: Cal Poly – 11-15, Chapman – 10-11, and BYU – 12-13.

After building some confidence with an OT victory over Davenport, I believe they  finally have a chance to get the big win over a top-ranked opponent next Tuesday – #21 Grand Canyon over #7 UCSB. This weekend should be a great preview to see if the Lopes can keep up their winning ways, as they take on the Utah Utes on Saturday.

The Gauchos are no slump, but they’ve had some very hard fought games early on that went both ways, a loss to Stanford, a dominating performance over Cal Poly, then an overtime loss to Colorado State and a two-goal loss to the Buffs of Colorado. If the Gauchos come out slow, this could be a great chance for the Lopes to get their first big win in the MCLA D1 and would certainly give them a big jump in the polls.

MCLA D2

I’m flipping sides this week and picking the team I picked to get upset last week – #15 Grand Valley State over #3 St. John’s. After losing to Liberty 7-15, the Lakers dropped six spots in the polls and to 2-3 on the season. While this gives them a losing record, this also puts them, or should I say their opponents, in a very dangerous position. All three of their losses are to top 15 teams and after losing to Liberty at home last weekend, you can bet that the Lakers are out to prove themselves this upcoming week.

St. John’s will be coming off almost a span of four weeks without playing any games and so far in the season, have yet to be tested with a close game. This could just be a testament to how good they are, but it also puts them in a great position to be upset this Friday when they meet GVSU in Illinois.

Now it’s your turn, which of these upsets do YOU think is most likely to happen?
