Size, Speed, Skill: Jason Kelly ’14

0 - Published November 18, 2013 by in High School

The production value of the video above doesn’t hurt, but what’s really good about it is the skill on display from attackman Jason Kelly of Salesianum Lacrosse. He’s got a strong left hand, good size, and a nice ability to parlay that size, speed, strength, and skill into tons of solid scoring chances. He also buries the ball pretty well, and finds open teammates nicely.

10 Players Of Note: UP Lax Annapolis

Club teams from Canada, the West Coast, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and several regions descended upon Annapolis during the second weekend of November for UP Lax. I took in the games, and while the players listed below are not necessarily the best players at the event, each of them captured our attention in one way or another during the games that we saw.

Ever Seen A Behind The Back Face Off?

Stephen Cuccurullo of the Tenacious Turtles wins a face off clamp, pulls the ball out with one hand, and goes behind his back to keep possession. I am pretty sure I couldn’t do that! The ref is in the way, but the video should be slow enough where you can see the action. Pretty insane stuff from a kid who is still quite a few years away from playing in college.

An Ugly Situation: Shoreham-Wading River

For 19 consecutive seasons Tom Rotanz has been the Head Boys Lacrosse Coach at Shoreham-Wading River High School on Long Island. An SWR school board meeting on Tuesday night revealed that Rotanz would not retain his job as the coach of the team, and what had been an ugly situation set to brew, is quickly becoming a steaming hot pot of disaster for people on both sides of the debate.

The World Needed Another Gordon Purdie

The World Needed Another Gordon Purdie

Last Thursday, I threw it back to the 80′s, showing the highlights of the Aldephi lacrosse program, specifically when they took down Harvard. It looks like the passion for lacrosse didn’t stop there, we were informed by big Gordon himself that there is another Gordon Purdie on the scene. His son, Gordon, is a 2015 product, tearing up the sport out in New York.

Junior Swarm: A Model For America

Minnesota is on board, are you? If you read my last article about the Jr. NLL, you probably noticed the guys dressed in the yellow honey comb jerseys. That would be the Junior Swarm and although they haven’t been playing lacrosse indoors for very long, the instruction and commitment they have received from Aime Caines, Ryan Benesch and the rest of the Swarm organization, is what I believe rocketed them to the top.

2016 Non-Hot Bed FoGo

Lacrosse in Missouri is definitely growing, but it has a long way to go before it’s considered a hot bed of recruitable D1 lacrosse talent. At this point in the state’s development, the above is to be expected, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t ANY D1 level talent in the state! To prove you wrong, I’d like you to meet Alex Bean.

Welcome to Throwback Thursday! Corey Robert sent in this great video featuring some high school lacrosse in New Jersey from 1975! Corey’s dad was the goalie for Boonton in the above game where they played Montclair from the State Championship. Montclair won in 1975, and Boonton took the title in 1976, with Mr. Robert still in goal.

Hot Pot: National vs. Local Club Teams

0 - Published September 11, 2013 by in High School, Hot Pot

Someone recently posed this question to me: Are there national lacrosse brands? This question was asked in reference to club programs, specifically high school club teams, rather than to “brands” in the sense of gear manufacturers. So, are there “national lacrosse brands,” and if so, are they better than local club teams?
