Brown Lacrosse’s Path to Redemption: The Mike Daly Years

In the world of college lacrosse, few names shine as brightly as that of Mike Daly. He’s a coach whose reputation precedes him, marked by a remarkable tenure at Tufts University. Three NCAA National Championship titles and a formidable scoring offense established Daly as one of the greats of Division 3 lacrosse. Yet, since taking over the Brown Men’s Lacrosse program back in 2016, he’s been on a different journey, one that speaks to the trials and tribulations of building a Division 1 program, especially in the challenging landscape of the Ivy League.

The Tufts Era: A Legacy of Success

Before we delve into Daly’s time at Brown, it’s essential to acknowledge his extraordinary legacy at Tufts University. With a coaching record of 244-83 in 18 seasons, Daly’s teams at Tufts made nine NCAA Tournament appearances and secured seven NESCAC titles. Notably, the Jumbos clinched national championships in 2010, 2014, and 2015. The 2014 Tufts team led the nation in scoring, marking an astonishing 402 goals in 23 games, averaging an impressive 17.48 goals per game.

Daly’s Tufts squads were nothing short of dominant, both on the field and in the classroom. His players earned numerous accolades, including Scholar All-American honors, highlighting their excellence on and off the field. The Tufts lacrosse program became deeply involved in the community, exemplifying Daly’s commitment to a well-rounded approach to coaching.

The Transition to Brown

In 2016, Mike Daly embarked on a new chapter when he assumed the role of head coach for the Brown men’s lacrosse program. The move came on the heels of Brown’s remarkable run to the NCAA Division 1 National Semifinals in 2016, a season that saw the Bears capture the Ivy League Championship for the second consecutive year.

Daly inherited a program with tremendous potential and a rich lacrosse history. However, the path to success at Brown has proven to be more challenging than anticipated. The program has been striving to recapture the glory of its NCAA Tournament Semifinal run under the leadership of former coach Lars Tiffany, who propelled the team to national prominence.

Challenges at Brown

Since Daly’s arrival at Brown, the team has shown promise, but they haven’t been able to replicate their previous successes. In 2020 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bears compiled a 3-2 record under Daly, showcasing victories over formidable opponents like Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, and eighth-ranked Virginia. However, they faced setbacks against Providence and Stony Brook, with both losses coming by a single goal.

The Ivy League did not participate in the 2021 season, but Brown was able to play a single game against a tough Boston University team, resulting in a dominant 12-5 victory. The 2022 campaign offered a glimpse of potential as the Bears posted a 10-5 overall record and secured a share of the Ivy League Regular Season Title. They earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, underscoring the team’s capability.

The 2023 season concluded with a 6-8 record and a 2-4 Ivy League standing. While five Bears, including First Team All-Ivy Matthew Gunty, earned postseason Ivy League honors, the team faced challenges. Seven Brown seniors faced a three-game suspension, impacting the squad’s chemistry and performance.

The Future with Mike Daly

While Brown’s journey under Mike Daly hasn’t yet mirrored the heights of Tufts’ glory, it’s crucial to remember that building a Division 1 program takes time and patience. The Ivy League is a highly competitive landscape, and success doesn’t come easily. Mike Daly’s coaching pedigree and dedication are undeniable. He’s among the top coaches in the game today, with a track record of success that speaks for itself. It’s only a matter of time before he cracks the seal for the Brown Bears and makes significant noise in the Ivy League and on the national stage.

In conclusion, Mike Daly is not only one of the greatest coaches in the game but also a builder of programs. His journey at Brown is a testament to the challenges and triumphs of college lacrosse. While the road may be tough, there’s no doubt that Daly’s leadership will lead the Bears to a brighter future, where they’ll rise to the forefront of Ivy League.
