Johns Hopkins Lacrosse 2025 Preview

The Johns Hopkins lacrosse program in 2024 had one of those seasons where every week felt like must watch TV and for the most part, they always came out on top. They kicked off the season with a one-goal loss to Denver at home which left some fans concerned about the direction the team was headed. However they bounced back right away and went on a run, ripping off four straight wins against Towson, Georgetown, Loyola, and North Carolina. That stretch really set the tone because they weren’t just beating meaningless, teams they were handling ranked opponents with confidence. The team was firing on all cylinders when they walked over to Virginia and handled the Cavaliers 16-14 which is about as big as it gets when it comes to road wins. But lacrosse is unpredictable, and just when it felt like they had things figured out, Syracuse edged them in a heartbreaking 13-14 loss followed up by a stunning one-goal loss to Navy at home which took a lot of air out of the team.

That was until conference play where the team gathered up the strength to go on an all-time run. They rebounded against Rutgers, then battled through close wins over Michigan and Penn State. The game at Ohio State was a nail-biter, but another win in the books. historic rival Maryland was next, and shutting them down 7-5 showed how tough this Hopkins defense could be. Then came Michigan again in the Big Ten tournament, which is probably the last team you want to see here as they always find a way to pull out the upset, which they did 7-10. NCAA Tournament bound meant the Johns Hopkins Lacrosse program would square up with Lehigh, where they won 13-10. However, Virginia got their revenge in the postseason, ending Hopkins’ run in a 10-11 battle. It was a season filled with big wins, tough losses, and just enough drama to make you excited for what’s next.

Johns Hopkins lacrosse had some serious firepower in 2024, led by Jacob Angelus, who was the team’s top playmaker with 69 points, thanks to his 44 assists. Garrett Degnon was the go-to goal scorer, racking up 47 goals while adding seven assists. Matt Collison brought balance with 23 goals and 10 assists, while Russell Melendez chipped in 27 points. Dylan Bauer and Johnathan Peshko rounded out the offensive production. Between the pipes, Cornell transfer Chayse Ierlan was a workhorse, playing every game and making 199 saves. His 9.53 goals-against average kept Hopkins in tight games all season long.

Johns Hopkins Lacrosse is keeping some key pieces from 2024, which should give them a solid foundation next season. Jacob Angelus, the team’s top scorer, is no longer with the team but Matt Collison, and Russell Melendez are back and will have to take a bigger step in the offense. Collison and Melendez will likely take on even bigger roles with Angelus gone. Dylan Bauer returns as a key midfielder, and with Chayse Ierlan no longer between the pipers, the goalie position will see a new starter. With experienced scorers still in the mix and a world-class defense, Hopkins should have no trouble keeping up in the Big Ten.

Johns Hopkins isn’t shying away from challenges in 2025, stacking their schedule with tough out-of-conference matchups. They’ll start with a rematch against Denver, this time on the road, looking to avenge last year’s one-goal loss. They’ll also take trips to Towson, Loyola , Syracuse, and Navy, all teams that gave them battles last season. The home slate includes Georgetown, North Carolina, and Virginia, with that Cavaliers matchup once again set up to be a high-powered showdown.

Conference play will be just as intense. Hopkins has to go on the road for Michigan, Penn State, and a huge rivalry matchup against Maryland. Those are all places where wins don’t come easy. The biggest home game might be Ohio State, which also serves as their homecoming matchup. Hopkins has the talent to compete at a high level again. The road back to the NCAA Tournament won’t be easy, but this team has the pieces to make another deep run.
