Welcome to the very first installment of the Know the Game podcast series! Today’s episode is featuring fellow podcaster and jack of many trades, Sean DeLaney. Currently, Sean is serving as the Executive Director for the Philadelphia Wings of the NLL, one of the league’s two expansion teams for the 2018-19 season. He is no newcomer to lacrosse as he spent his college days down in Chapel Hill, playing for the University of North Carolina, before continuing on to the MLL and suiting up for the Denver Outlaws.
We talk about how despite never being in the NLL as a player, how did he come to running the front office for one of the marquee franchises in the sport. For those that don’t know, the Philly Wings were a staple in the NLL for decades before relocating to New England a few years back. The fans were heard and the Wings are back. Sean now has a lot to do when it come to the preparations and execution of the much-anticipated revival.
Finding Time with Sean DeLaney
We recorded this episode at the 2018 US Lacrosse Convention on the heels of announcing Paul Day as their head coach and GM. It may sound a little crowded (it was), but we think the ambience of lacrosse fans adds a nice touch.
My goal was to get Sean to describe the division of responsibilities between the front office and the on-floor decisions, some of the behind-the-scenes activities in running a new NLL franchise, and how they work closely with their ownership and partner organizations.
This being our first episode, I also take some time to introduce you to the podcast by discussing what we plan to do with it, and more importantly, why.
