We have a brief rundown of some of the major games from last weekend, plus video highlights.

NCAA Women’s Lacrosse, Week 2: Top Moments

Top Women’s Lacrosse Storylines

One of the big games this weekend was the Northwestern – Notre Dame game that was held on Valentine’s Day. Notre Dame came into this game ranked No. 6 in the country while Northwestern was polled at No. 3. The Wildcats had come off of two explosive offensive displays against Detroit Mercy and Duke the week before. This game was another shootout, but the Fighting Irish had a bit more firepower to take the 17-15 victory. Notre Dame moved up to the No. 2 spot while Northwestern dropped to No. 6 in this week’s Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.

Speaking of impressive offensive displays, North Carolina went off for 24 goals against High Point, while the Panthers only managed three tallies on the scoreboard against the Tar Heels. North Carolina has started the season 3-0, and looks to continue its early momentum as the season begins to take shape.

The other interesting game on Friday was Stanford’s one-goal loss to Virginia. The Wahoos were the No. 7 team in the country entering the matchup, while Stanford wasn’t mentioned in the poll at all. The Cardinal put up a great effort, led by Mikaela Watson with four goals, while Sammy Mueller took over the game for Virginia with six goals in the winning effort. While still a loss, this game gives Stanford some momentum to build on as ac-12 women’s lacrosse continues to work to establish itself as a top conference for women’s college lacrosse while conference-member national power USC — ranked No. 17 at the time — took down No. 8 Michigan over the weekend.

Saturday saw the now-ranked No. 3 Florida Gators (then-ranked No. 12) take the one-goal, 15-14 win over women’s lacrosse perennial power Maryland. The Gators ended Maryland’s 86-game home win streak and was the Terps first loss since losing to Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament on May 5 last season. The Terps would eventually win the NCAA championship that same year while star-goalkeeper Megan Taylor won the Tewaaraton.

North Carolina would continue to roll against Davidson by a score of 22-5 on Sunday while Northwestern took out some frustration with Friday’s loss on Arizona State to the tune of a 28-goal performance against the Sun Devil’s 12 marks on the scoresheet. Navy also beat Duke, and it appears to be a good year for lacrosse-legend Cindy Timchal’s squad.
