Ohio State Lacrosse 2025 Preview

Ohio State Lacrosse kicked off its 2024 season last year on a high note with three strong wins over Utah, Cleveland State, and Bellarmine. It became clear early on that the team had good offensive depth and was able to remain gritty from start to finish especially in the 13-6 victory over Cleveland State. It felt like they were firing on all cylinders early on, but the road got bumpier as tougher opponents lined up. Their trip to Air Force went smoothly with another win, but their first big test came against #3 Virginia. That game exposed a few cracks in the armor, as they fell 11-6. It didn’t get easier with #10 Cornell, where they battled hard but still came up short, 11-15. It seemed like their momentum slowed a bit but it was clear the Buckeyes knew what they needed to adjust,

Then came a nail-biter against #3 Notre Dame, where the Buckeyes played one of their closest games of the season but couldn’t pull off the upset. This surely put a big hit on team moral as multiple losses against quality opponents would make any team question their ceiling. After those tough out-of-conference ranked matchups, they got back on track with a solid win against Detroit Mercy. But once conference play started, it all seemingly went downhill. They opened Big Ten play against #7 Penn State and lost in another tight one, 9-12. They were able to pull out their only conference win against Rutgers but by the time they faced Maryland in a 7-8 loss, it seemed like the team was fighting an uphill battle with no hope as the finish line approached. The loss to #5 Johns Hopkins was another heartbreaker in overtime, leaving fans wondering what could’ve been.

They finished the regular season with a one goal loss against Michigan which then carried over into the playoffs where they faced the Wolverines again. A 9-15 loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor ended their season with an overall record of 6-9. It was a season full of ups and downs, and while they didn’t have the fairytale ending, they certainly showed flashes of what’s possible.

Ohio State Lacrosse had some standout performances in 2024, with Alex Marinier leading the charge offensively, tallying 28 goals and 30 total points across 15 games. Jack McKenna wasn’t far behind, contributing 21 goals while adding on 9 assist along the way. Ed Shean also added a solid 17 goals and 28 points, giving the Buckeyes a reliable offensive core. At the X, Tommy Burke and Jack Oldman handled the bulk of faceoffs helping the team go 197-364, which gave the team opportunities to control possessions. While a few players had breakout moments, the balance between consistent scoring and depth was key for Ohio State.

Several key contributors from the 2024 Ohio State Lacrosse team are returning for the 2025 season, bringing both experience and impact. Alex Marinier, the team’s top scorer from last season, will again be pivotal in leading the offense with his scoring prowess and playmaking ability. Jack McKenna, another major offensive threat, returns with his size and ability to dominate in front of the net. Ed Shean’s well-rounded game will continue to provide consistency and leadership on attack. On the defensive side, Caleb Fyock’s newfound experience will anchor the unit, while Jack Oldman at the faceoff X looks to build on last year’s efforts.

Ohio State Lacrosse has an exciting 2025 schedule packed with opportunities to shine and grow. Moving into the spring, they’ll face several familiar opponents like Utah, Detroit Mercy, and Cleveland State, with all those games also set to be played in Columbus. The Buckeyes will play seven straight at home to start the year which should hopefully put their confidence in a good spot. A highly anticipated home game against Virginia on February 22 will be a significant test, as the Cavaliers remain a top-tier program.

Ohio State hits the road for challenging matchups against Notre Dame, Denver, Penn State, and Michigan. These games will provide critical chances to establish themselves in the Big Ten. Key home matchups include Rutgers and Maryland, both powerhouse programs that the Buckeyes will need to beat to make a playoff push. They’ll also visit Johns Hopkins, which always brings an intense atmosphere. With a mix of tough out-of-conference opponents and high-stakes Big Ten battles, 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Ohio State Lacrosse.
