The Saskatoon Brewers had an explosive first game of the season against the Saskatoon Steelers — last year’s toughest opponent — on May 10th in Canadian Senior B Box Lacrosse action.. The Brewers lead 3-1 in the first, it was a tight period fueled by hard defense and an offense that never stopped shooting. Levi Dziadyk scored a quick solo goal with 18:53 left in the first. We wouldn’t see another goal until the Steelers evened up the game at 13:34. Defense was solid for both teams this period, as the Brewers offense settled in the scored started to spread. Jack Okanee had a clean hard hit on Steelers shooter close to the bench from a loose ball, which caught admiration and exclaim from both benches and the fans watching. After a penalty taken by the Steelers we would see two goals in a row for the Brewers; one from Adam Saunders who was a leader in scoring last year, and another from Bryton Thorarinsson to end the period. The first period was a hard fought battle for both teams looking to prove to each other who would take the lead this year in the PGLL Senior B league. The Brewers had over twenty shots on net in the first period with only three scores, and hoped to land more moving into the second.
The second period saw the Brewers offense take charge scoring 11 goals in the twenty minute period, and the defense beating down on the Steelers efforts to get any momentum going. The first goal of the period was a solo goal quickly scored by team Captain Brandon Murphy. Shortly following was an assisted goal by Casey Maclntyre pushing the Brewers to 5-1 lead with 18:14 left in the period. Assistant Captain Baeley Malkoske found himself in a short fight five minutes into the period with a frustrated Steelers player. The Steelers player was ejected for the game, which seemed to set the tone or the rest of the period, and Malkoske landed a two minute roughing penalty. The rest of the second period saw B. Murphy, Maclntyre, L. Dziadyk, and Thorarinsson scoring another goal each; A. Saunders would have back to back goals at 13:01 and 12:43. Jordan Tornato had a massive clean hit into the boards behind the net on Steelers player Regan Harding, who joined the Brewers at the 2018 Presidents Cup (the championship of Canadian Senior B Box Lacrosse) in Nanaimo BC. The Steelers were unable to get an offense going which ended the period at 14-1 for the Brewers.
Brandon Murphy opened up the third period with an assisted goal setting the Brewers at 15-1 with 17:54 left in the game. The third period was a defensive one not seeing any more action until a dirty hit by two Steelers players on Jordan Tornato, caused a fight. Tornato finding himself in his first ever fight, held his ground and showed that he is more than just a FOGO player. Tornato had won every single face off during the game, clearly causing some built up tension within the Steelers team. With 8:55 left, the Steelers player and Tornato were ejected for the fight, Tornato earning player of the game for his performance. Brewers came in afterwards and scored two goals in simple fashion, with the Steelers finally scoring their second goal with 2:20 left in the game. Coach Marcus Fischer would walk into the changing room with a smile, ready to celebrate the first win of the season. The Saskatoon Brewers showed that they are ready to dominate the league again this year- aiming for their sixth provincial title and fourth Presidents Cup appearance.
