Zach Herreweyers: The Greyhounds Feel Good

I met Zach Herreweyers five years ago when we both attended The Hill Academy. He is a great person, great player, and a great friend. I remember playing side by side with him, and there is no other lefty attackman I would rather have on my line. Sure, he has a good stick and an even better shot, but what truly separates him from the rest is his mentality.

Get to know Zach Herreweyers

Zach was always calm and cool on the field. Nothing ever seemed to bother him and the few turnovers he did make were always accompanied by a dangerous ride all the way to the midline. He rolled with the punches and always punched back.

Since he was always in the right spot, it was easy for me to find him wide open on the crease. Zach Herreweyers fully understood his craft and appreciated his art back then, so no wonder he’s killing it as a Greyhound.

His love for the game shows in every play that he makes.

Off the field, Zach and I seemed to mesh well with our goofy sense of humor and never-ending conversations about the sport we both love.

I remember how Zach would always get on the bus in the morning with a grin on his face and his Blackberry in hand. Yes, Blackberry – they may or may not still be the most popular smartphone in Canada.

He’d look at me and say, “Mase, you won’t believe the beauty I caught yesterday!”

Then he’d proceed to show me some insanely large Salmon on his phone that he caught in the creek behind his Hill Academy boarding house in Woodbridge, Ontario.

I remember me and a few of the boys went in that same creek looking for a fish a little bit bigger than the one Zach caught. We never had any luck and often wondered how he was catching all these fish. Zach Herreweyers never told us his secret, he just insisted it was his sheer talent that allowed him to catch the monstrous fish.

I’ll never forget what Zach said after showing me a picture of yet another fish on his phone, “If fishing was a collegiate sport, I’d be going Ivy League, bud.”

It’s funny now, when I started working for Lacrosse All Stars I knew I would be interviewing great Lacrosse players. However, never in my wildest dreams did I realize that these great players would also be some of my great friends.

It was a true honor to interview Zach Herreweyers today, and I hope he achieves the dream that he has had since he first picked up a stick. With another Hill Academy alum, Ryan Fournier, playing along side Zach for Loyola, it’s safe to assume who I’ll be routing for this weekend. Go Hounds!
