Let me tell you about one of my favorite books, “Mindset: How You Can Fulfill Your Potential”, by Carol Dweck.

My friend and mentor Vince Gabriele, of Gabriele Fitness, turned me on to it. I highly recommend that you read it, however let me give you a brief overview of the book and tell you why we love it so much here at SKPC.

In her book Dweck says that there are two types of people out there:

People who have a “Fixed” mindset and people who have a “Growth” mindset.

Fixed Mindset

Those who have a fixed mindset believe that you have a natural-born level of ability, in whatever it is, and that you can not change or work on those abilities. It is what it is…..

If you are born to be a great attackman, you will be one… once you learn the basics. If you are born with a math mind, then it will come easily to you.

These people tend to avoid challenges that are outside their realm of “expertise” and they give up on things if they don’t gel quickly.

Growth Mindset

Those with a growth mindset, on the other hand, believe that no matter where your natural abilities start, you can always find a way to improve.

Now, this doesn’t mean that these people are pie in the sky daydreamers who think that they can accomplish whatever they set their mind to.

If you’re 5’3″, you probably aren’t going to start as an NBA Center. I don’t like to say “never,” but that would be a pretty safe bet. You can, however, learn to be a heck of a basketball player.

Don’t pay attention to what limits you. Pay attention to what you can do to improve where you are now.

After all, that’s what brought you in this article in the first place, right?
