Highbridge Wins First-Ever MSAL City Championship; First Time For A School In The Bronx

History was made on Saturday, June 15th at Fordham University’s Murphy Field as both the girls and boys lacrosse teams from the Highbridge Green School (09×361) took home the Middle School Athletic League (MSAL) City Championship. This marks the first time a middle school in the Bronx has won the league in lacrosse.

This was no easy task for the Highbridge girls (7-2-1) who took on the two-time defending champion Anderson Dragons, defeating them 9-4. The boys finished their dominant undefeated (9-0) season against Hunter Middle School, who they defeated 12-2 in the MSAL championship.

The Highbridge Green lacrosse program is supported by Bronx Lacrosse, a non-profit founded in 2017 by Tufts University graduate Dan Leventhal, which aims to improve student’s academic and socio-emotional performance through lacrosse. Bronx Lacrosse is currently partnered with two middle schools in the South Bronx: Highbridge Green (09×361) & the Rafael Hernandez Dual Language Magnet School (09×218) and are servicing 120 students.

Most importantly, we have continued to see immense academic improvement from our program participants. Some 2018-2019 school year highlights:

  • On average, our students grew two full grade levels in reading and math in the span of just one year.
  • Our students maintained 96% school attendance.
  • 100% of our 8th graders graduated middle school on time.

The results of the Bronx Lacrosse are clearly showing as students in the program have maintained a 96% school attendance rate. In addition, all 8th graders in the program are on track to pass 100% of their classes and graduate middle school on time.

The future looks bright for Bronx Lacrosse as it strives to give the Bronx youth opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. For more information, please visit bronxlacrosse.org.
