Early Thoughts On The NCAA D1 Lacrosse Season

The D1 NCAA Lacrosse season is well underway, and every single D1 program has played at least one game. Some teams have played as many as four games already, and we’ve got a couple of undefeated squads looking strong early. It’s time to run through the D1 scene and see where things stand.

It’s fairly well known that longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is a lacrosse guy. His daughter is the head coach for Wesleyan’s women’s program, and she as well as Bill himself played their college ball at Wesleyan. This week, Peter Baum tweeted a photo of Belichick wearing a Johns Hopkins lacrosse sweatshirt at the NFL Combine.

Last week we had UNC vs UVA for the whole enchilada that was 1986. This week, we’re going two days further back in time to see how UNC made it to the finals. How’d they do it? They knocked off legendary Johns Hopkins, that’s how!

Tom Garvey gave me an older STX Proton+ from his days at Johns Hopkins and he wanted a pocket thrown in there so he could either use the stick while coaching or put it on display. I decided to up the ante a little bit and throw in a second head, which I dyed to resemble the Hopkins head in style, to commemorate his time playing for Maverik United in the LXM PRO.

Today’s Throwback Thursday post focuses on Dave Pietramala, and we’re using a 1989 NCAA Semifinal game between Johns Hopkins and UNC to demonstrate his straight up dominance. Petro is now the head coach at Hop, but he was also a terror with a longstick on the field during his playing days. He drew the top assignment, and then made them pay.
