Early Thoughts On The NCAA D1 Lacrosse Season

The D1 NCAA Lacrosse season is well underway, and every single D1 program has played at least one game. Some teams have played as many as four games already, and we’ve got a couple of undefeated squads looking strong early. It’s time to run through the D1 scene and see where things stand.

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s lacrosse team won their third game of the year (in their third one goal game of the year), topping Drexel 11-10. It’s hard to call a team battle tested this early in the year, but if anyone has the right to do so, it’s UVA.

The NCAA D1 season is now well underway, and it’s only February. Instead of previewing these last few teams, we’ll talk about their 2014 seasons so far, assuming they’ve played games… We narrow down the alphabetical list with the Virginia Cavaliers, located in Charlottesville, VA. The Cavs are 3-0 right now, and each of their games have been decided by one goal. It’s clearly going to be a tight year for UVA.

Throwback Thursday: 1986 UNC-UVA

UNC edged Johns Hopkins 10-9 in OT in one semifinal, and Virginia took down Syracuse 12-10 in the other semifinal. This was the first year where semifinal games were played at neutral sites. Coincidence? Probably, but a neat historical note either way. This was also the first time two schools from the same conference faced off for a D1 title.

The College Lacrosse season is upon us, and while every team out there hasn’t played a game yet (NCAA D3 NESCAC teams don’t start practice for 5 more days), plenty of teams have seen game action, and others are putting up solid preseason video. That means one thing: It’s time for a Video Explosion!

It’s only fall ball, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited for some excellent fall ball video! BHSVideoDad is back at it, and covers the big boys from D1 as they play a fall event in Kezar Stadium at the 2013 Fall Classic in San Francisco, CA.

Throwback Thursday: 1980 National Championship

Johns Hopkins defeated Virginia 9-8 (in overtime) in the 1980 Division 1 Men’s Lacrosse national championship game. The game was played at Cornell University in front of over 10,000 fans. Jeff Harris scored the OT game winner for Hop, and the goal was assisted by Jim Bidne. This was Hopkins’ third straight national title in men’s lacrosse.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a D1 lacrosse player over the Summer? We check in with James Pannell, who just finished up his freshman year at Virginia, to see what these guys do, and it’s a lot of work, or just some well deserved pool time!
