Women’s Pro Lacrosse Is Back: AU Week 1 Recap

Women’s professional lacrosse is back for the 2021 season thanks to Athletes Unlimited! Official play kicked off this weekend featuring the best female lacrosse players in the world. Newly appointed Syracuse women’s coach Kayla Treanor is pictured above. All photos, video highlights, and game recaps are thanks to AU.


Friday, July 23 – Boyds, Maryland

GAME 1: Team Ohlmiller v Team Benson

TEAM OHLMILLER SOARS IN INAUGURAL ATHLETES UNLIMITED LACROSSE CONTEST

Team Ohlmiller got off to a flying start by scoring the game’s first five goals en route to claiming the first victory in Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse history with an 11-3 verdict against Team Benson at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Friday evening.

Kayla Treanor (Syracuse) scored three of her game-high four goals in the first half as Team Ohlmiller surged to a 7-2 advantage in the opening 16 minutes and never looked back. Halle Majorana (Syracuse) added two goals with two assists while team captain Kylie Ohlmiller (Stony Brook) chipped in a pair of markers.

Marie McCool (North Carolina) paced Team Benson in the loss with two goals while Mollie Stevens (Florida) contributed the team’s other tally.

Team Benson outshot Team Ohlmiller, 21-18, but Team Ohlmiller claimed an 11-7 advantage on draw controls.


GAME 2: Team O’Donnell v Team Douty

TEAM O’DONNELL HOLDS OFF TEAM DOUTY TO SECURE 8-7 VICTORY

Taylor Cummings (Maryland) scored three goals and Cortney Fortunato (Notre Dame) added two goals in the third quarter as Team O’Donnell outlasted Team Douty to secure an 8-7 victory to close out the opening night of Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse action at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Friday evening.

In a tightly-contested game which saw neither team lead by more than three goals, Team O’Donnell won despite being held scoreless for the final 8:07 of the contest. Team Douty trimmed the margin to 8-7 in the fourth quarter with goals from Sam Apuzzo (Boston College) and Izzy McMahon (USC), but was unable to get the tying goal in the closing seconds.

Cummings, the first overall pick in Tuesday’s inaugural weekly draft, led all players with her hat trick performance to go with four ground balls. Fortunato chipped in two goals with an assist while goalkeeper Caylee Waters (North Carolina) tallied eight saves.

Katrina Dowd (Northwestern) and Apuzzo each netted two goals in a losing effort for Team Douty, which outshot Team O’Donnell by a 25-18 margin.


Saturday, July 24 – Boyds, Maryland

GAME 3: Team Ohlmiller v Team O’Donnell

TEAM OHLMILLER’S LATE RUN CLINCHES 11-7 VICTORY OVER TEAM O’DONNELL

Team Ohlmiller broke a 7-all tie by scoring the game’s final four goals to earn its second straight win, an 11-7 victory over Team O’Donnell in Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse action at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday afternoon.

The win allowed Team Ohlmiller to remain unbeaten with a 2-0 record, while Team O’Donnell saw its record for the week move to 1-1.

Team Ohlmiller used a balanced scoring attack to earn the victory as seven different players tallied a goal, including four players with a two-goal effort. Dempsey Arsenault (Boston College) paced all players with two goals and two assists, while Halle Majorana (Syracuse) chipped in two goals with an assist.

Team O’Donnell received two-goal performances from Taylor Cummings (Maryland) and Sammy Jo Tracy (North Carolina) in the loss.

The goalkeeping tandem of Britt Read (Oregon) and Kady Glynn (Virginia Tech) combined to register 12 saves for Team Ohlmiller, which was outshot by a 28-17 margin.


GAME 4: Team Benson v Team Douty

TEAM BENSON RALLIES PAST TEAM DOUTY FOR 8-6 ATHLETES UNLIMITED VICTORY

Marie McCool (North Carolina) scored two goals, including the first two-pointer in Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse history, and Angie Benson (Virginia Tech) made five saves as Team Benson secured its first win of the opening weekend with an 8-6 triumph over Team Douty at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday afternoon. 

The win allowed Team Benson to move to 1-1 on the weekend, while Team Douty remains winless in its two weekend contests. 

McCool, who was one of four players to record a multi-goal game in the contest, made league history with her two-point marker on a free-position attempt with seven seconds remaining in the second quarter. She also added the eventual game-winning marker with 2:26 remaining in regulation and added three draw controls. 

Kenzie Kent (Boston College) also scored twice for Team Benson, which was outshot by a 23-17 margin. Benson recorded four of her five saves after the intermission. 

A trio of players – Katrina Dowd (Northwestern), Molly Garrett (Michigan) and Sam Apuzzo (Boston College) – each scored twice in the loss for Team Douty. 


Sunday, July 25 – Boyds, Maryland

GAME 5: Team Ohlmiller v Team Douty

TEAM OHLMILLER USES QUICK START TO COMPLETE UNBLEMISHED WEEKEND 

Led by attacker Kayla Treanor (Syracuse), Team Ohlmiller used a blazing start to build an early lead and held off a late charge by Team Douty for an 8-7 victory in Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse action at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Sunday afternoon. 

The win allowed Team Ohlmiller to complete the opening weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. Team Douty, meanwhile, dropped to 0-3 with all three of its losses decided by a combined four points. 

Just as it had done on Friday and Saturday, Team Ohlmiller got things off and running quickly in the opening quarter. It took the squad just 99 seconds to build a 3-0 lead, which included a goal and two assists from Treanor. 

Team Douty trimmed the margin to 5-3 before Treanor netted the lone goal of the second frame, giving Team Ohlmiller a three-point edge at the intermission. 

After the teams traded a pair of goals in the third quarter, Team Douty began its comeback bid with three straight goals, including a pair of markers from Emily Parros (North Carolina), but Team Ohlmiller held on to secure the one-point lead. 

Treanor paced all players with four goals and two assists, while Halle Majorana (Syracuse) chipped in two goals with two assists. 

Parros was the lone Team Douty player to record a multi-goal game. Izzy McMahon (USC) added a goal and an assist in the loss.


GAME 6: Team O’Donnell v Team Benson

TEAM O’DONNELL CLOSES OPENING WEEKEND WITH 10-6 VICTORY OVER TEAM BENSON

Team O’Donnell used goals from six different players, including two-goal efforts from Taylor Cummings (Maryland) and Michelle Tumolo (Syracuse), to close out the opening weekend of Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse with a 10-6 victory over Team Benson at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Sunday afternoon.
Team O’Donnell finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, while Team Benson concludes the series with a 1-2 mark. 

Team O’Donnell bolted out of the gate with three goals, including a two-point marker by Cortney Fortunato (Notre Dame), to take a 4-0 lead in the game’s first six minutes. 

After back-to-back goals from Marie McCool (North Carolina) narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the final 90 seconds of the opening stanza, Team O’Donnell scored three consecutive goals to take a 7-2 advantage into the intermission. 

The teams traded goals three times before Grace Gabriel (Marquette) closed the scoring with her second goal of the weekend off a McCool feed. 

McCool led all players with three goals and two assists in the loss for Team Benson, while Cummings had two goals with an assist for Team O’Donnell. 

Note: The game was halted by a 61-minute weather delay with 5:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, marking the first interruption of a game in the league’s brief history.
