This weekend, on Saturday, April 14th, Lacrosse Day will take place on the campus of Hampton University in Virginia. Lacrosse Day will be the first-ever meeting of three Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ lacrosse teams (Morgan State, Hampton and Howard).
Lacrosse Day is being held in honor of Mike Crawford, a former Hampton student whose dream was to start a lacrosse club at the University. The fourth team in attendance will be made up of alumni from St. Thomas More, a private school in CT that Mike attended before coming to Hampton.
Mike’s mom and dad, Verina and Errol Crawford, saw that dream through to the end, and if you want to learn more, you should definitely read my post on their journey:
Vance Brinkley of the Morgan State lacrosse club has released a video preview of the event, and after watching it, I’m even more excited for the opportunity to be there in person.
That’s right folks, I’m making the trip down from New York City to catch Lacrosse Day, and my father is joining me for the experience!
My dad coached me in lacrosse (and soccer) and was instrumental in my high school adding the sport (Weston HS in Weston, MA). I’m very excited to be able to take in this event and watch these new lacrosse teams with my father by my side. Lacrosse helped forge a special bond between us, and it’s been a long time since we shared it in person. I feel fortunate to be able to make it to the event, but to be able to take in this event under these circumstances is almost too much.
I can’t wait to take in a day of lacrosse and community at Hampton University on Saturday. The games will be played in the football stadium, which is a fantastic location for the event. It will be a thrill to see yet another part of the lacrosse community in action, and I have no doubt that these games will be hotly contested.
Is anyone else making the trip to Hampton, VA for Lacrosse Day? If you live in the area, it’s definitely going to be worth checking out! I’ll be there all day, so come on out and find me… and let’s watch some lax together!
