Monday Funday Lacrosse Drop

Get back into your weekday routine of lax, lax, lax, lax with LAS and a cup of coffee. You have to provide your own coffee.

Now that LAS is back and cranking again, we’re hitting the ground running.  412 Lax‘s Sunday post on Oregon’s lacrosse uniforms has infected me with the customizer bug.  I can’t stop creating uniforms for teams that are in need of some help so expect to see a lot more “recommendations” to programs out there doing less than they could.

What a coincidence, we have one right now!!

Cornell Could Use an Update

Cornell has a new coach.  Jeff  Tambroni is gone (off to Penn State) so maybe there is room for a little conservative experimentation.  Perhaps there is.  The simple, all red or all white helmets with an offset color chin are classic.  Those should never change.  But their uniforms would look great with some simple adjustments.

That’s BIG RED BEAR!

I’m not asking them to dress like a summer club team. It’s still Ivy League quality, it’s still smart and sophisticated and there isn’t THAT much grey.  This would be far from a big change for Cornell.  I would also give them high praise if they just went red shorts and white jerseys with no trim at all.  The numbers would be red and only on the jerseys, while the shorts would have a white Nike swoosh and a white C on them.  That’s it.

Sometimes it’s just about material quality and craftmanship. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Growing the Game #1

Up in the Bronx there’s lacrosse being played that I had NO idea about.  I feel like I’m pretty tuned in to the NYC lax scene, but I always love learning that it’s even bigger than I thought.  This is how the game spreads the right way: grass roots!  Also, did you know you never just say “Bronx”?  I mean, I just did but that’s not what I mean.  It’s always THE Bronx.  Kind of like the Vatican, the Hague, the Bahamas, the Netherlands and the Gambia.  I had to look that last one up.  Neat.

Growing the Game #2

How cool is this?  Seriously, how cool is this?  Thanks to Jeff Sobey for the great shots!

Growing the game, wilderness style. Crispy T!

Boxy Box Goodness

The NLL season is less than 2 months away.  This Boston Blazers promo isn’t anything new, but it is a high quality video, and that definitely counts for something in this day of fuzzy handheld vid.  Tip of the ol’ Boston Brahmin Bowler to the Blazers PR team.  It’s not really that hard, but no one else seems to be able to pull it off very well. On the floor, I think the Blazers could definitely contend this year but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Nazareth could look GOOD!

NCAA Division 3 team Nazareth has purple and gold as their official colors, but they’ve been adding grey in there for years now.  This helmet isn’t much of a departure from what they’ve done in the past, but if they were thinking of going all white in 2011, I hope this mockup dissuades them.

Purple jerseys and grey or silver shorts with yellow trim? Done deal for an away uniform. Home? All white. Or white with yellow or grey shorts. Keep the helmets on. Case close-ed.

This could be your lid. How excited would you be? I’d be excited. And I don’t even like purple.

Casey Powell: Promise for a Better Day

"Casey Powell should not be able to make it through a meal at a restaurant without someone coming to his table and asking for an autograph."

Last Friday, Michael J. Fensom of the New Jersey Star-Ledger published a descriptive article on Casey Powell - The Man, The Myth, The Legend.  In it, Fensom talks about the false facade of being a pro lacrosse player, exposing the fact that only a few pros make lacrosse their fulltime jobs.

Casey Powell is one of the lucky ones. He supplements his small pro-level income with endorsements and his own lacrosse company, which gives him the opportunity to really make lacrosse his life.  Yet, Powell still walks the streets of New York and into Madison Square Garden to suit up for the Titans without being noticed.  He's got LeBron James status in the lacrosse community, but outside it no one recognizes him.  This is the reality of the sport - it has not yet reached it's pinnacle.

Fensom goes on to talk about youth participation numbers and how they've grown 500% since 1999. He writes tells of US Lacorsse's survey that found lacrosse to be the fastest growing sport on the high school and collegiate levels. And then he shows why lacrosse IS on the rise: Community members are going above and beyond their call of duty to help grow the game.
