The year was 1987 and the late, great Paul Schimoler was only a sophomore for the Cornell Big Red men’s lacrosse program. Staring down Syracuse in the Carrier Dome, Schimoler posted a record-breaking 31 saves in what was one of the greatest performances between the irons caught on film.
Richie Moran called it the greatest performance he’s ever seen and 33 years later it still sticks. Gary Gait Tom Nelson, John Zulberti and Todd Curry gave Schimloer the heat, but could only come up with six total goals in the game. 19 in the bank on the other end signaled an absolute blowout in Central New York.
Cornell would best Syracuse once more in that 1987 season. The second meeting between the programs would come in the NCAA Semifinals, Cornell victorious, 18-15, only to fall to Johns Hopkins in the finale.
