NCAA Tournament Breakdown by State

USA Map 2014 mens lacrosse national championship tournament breakdown by state

We took all of the first round teams of the 2014 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament and broke down each roster and divided the players by state and province. Since all of the rosters had to be checked by hand, we can promise that a ton of effort was put forth, but our numbers could be slightly off (nobody’s perfect)!

Upset Of The Weekend: Albany Knocks Off Loyola

Loyola was the heavy favorite heading in, but that mattered little as Albany started out hot, played composed lacrosse for 60 minutes, and got a superb effort from their defense and goalie, Blaze Riorden. The Danes beat the Hounds 13-6 on the road, and move on to the next round of the NCAA tourney, looking like the hottest team in the country.

Lyle Thompson scored 9 goals

The first thing you notice about the young men known as the “Thompson Trio” is their superior skills on the lacrosse field. Brothers Lyle and Miles Thompson and their cousin Ty are all starters at the University of Albany.
But that’s not what makes them most proud.

Albany goes down 4-0 to Stony Brook, and then the Thompsons start scoring and things change quickly. We go from upset alert to straight up battle, with #1 seed Albany eventually winning out. You want behind the back goals? You want awesome dodges and passing? You want a game that goes to OT where the Danes win 17-16 and need a last second goal just to make it to OT?

Albany took down Stony Brook 17-7 this week, and the Thompsons were back to their old tricks, scoring at will, and making the rest of us look like average lacrosse players. This win was huge for Albany because it wrapped up an America East tourney bid for the Danes (they are 3-0 in conference).

I’m not going to lie, I am VERY excited for tonight’s Albany vs. Johns Hopkins game on ESPNU (7pm ET). In my rabid fandom I searched for videos of the Thompsons, and while I came across a number of well known classics, I also found a hidden gem that has somehow slipped through the cracks. How does this video of Lyle Thompson (playing for Lafayette HS) only have 771 views?

Lyle Thompson Behind The Back Dodge to BTB Goal

Lyle Thompson scored 9 goals

Lyle Thompson casually throws a split dodge behind his back, makes another quick move, and then feeds the crease, where he finds his brother, Miles, who finished with a casual behind the back goal. When your stick is an extension of your body, and you play a ton of backyard lacrosse, these kind of plays become routine. For the rest of us, it’s simply amazing, but for the Thompsons? It’s just another day at the office.
