We are quickly moving towards the first real NJCAA men’s lacrosse action of the 2019 season so our spring preview rolls on with an official Top 10 preseason poll from the NJCAA, more team by team previews, and more info on the Junior College lacrosse world. Dive right in, the water is only getting warmer!
NJCAA Top 10 Preseason Poll
Here is how the poll is set up:
# – Team (Record) – Poll points – 1st place votes – last poll rank*
*the last poll was the final poll from 2018
1 – Onondaga (0-0) – 60 – 6 – 1
2 – Nassau (0-0) – 53 – 0 – 2
3 – Genesee (0-0) – 49 – 0 – 3
4 – Howard (0-0) – 41 – 0 – 4
5 – Harford (0-0) – 35 – 0 – 5
6 – Anne Arundel (0-0) – 30 – 0 – 6
7 – Suffolk (0-0) – 22 – 0 – 7
8 – Essex (0-0) – 17 – 0 – Not Ranked
9 – Monroe (0-0) – 13 – 0 – 9
10 – Mercer (0-0) – 6 – 0 – Not Ranked (1st year team in 2019)
Others Receiving Votes: Hudson Valley (0-0, 3 points), Ocean County (0-0, 1 point)
My pre-preseason poll was pretty close, with Howard and Genesee flipped at #3 and #4, and then Suffolk and Monroe flipped at #7 and #9. Other than that, the polls were pretty much the same. Now we see how it all plays out, which is even better than preseason guessing!
2019 Junior College Team Previews & Players To Watch
Hudson Valley Vikings
2019 Team Captains: Chris Calicchia has been named a captain, and others will be named as the season progresses.
2019 Players to Watch: 2019 Vikings – I like the confidence in this answer from HVCC!
Quote from Head Coach, Matt Johnson, on his team for 2019: “We’ve taken a new approach this season and are really focused on Deyhontsigwa’ehs, and taken the time to understand the true roots of the game. We are very excited for the opportunity to play this great game with the creativity and passion it deserves. Hudson Valley will be a lot of fun to watch this spring.”

As a bonus, we have some photos of the HVCC’s gear, and their great approach to practice!
If you haven’t seen your team previewed it means your coach has not responded with answers and they are trying to be sneaky, which I can appreciate as a former college assistant. The results will speak for themselves soon enough though! It’s all good, the season is upon us in only a couple of days.

Big Upcoming NJCAA Games
Friday, February 22nd
ASA Brooklyn vs Ocean County – ASA is back for 2019, and they take on a rising program in OC to open up the official slate of games for the year.
Howard vs Navy JV – this is not an official NJCAA game, but it’s always a tough and exciting battle when these two meet up.
Saturday, February 23rd
Nassau vs Harford – VERY early regional statement game for both teams, and what’s really neat about this one is that it will be played on Tierney Field at USLacrosse HQ in Maryland. Not a bad way to open the season for either team. Not bad at all.
Onondaga vs Anne Arundel – Another big early game between the North and South regions.
Finger Lakes vs Mercer – Can Mercer live up to all the preseason hype people (like me) have laid upon them? We find out on Saturday!
Wednesday, February 27th
ASA Brooklyn vs Mercer – Two new teams for 2019, both with potential to make some noise, and they play each other early on. This should be an epic battle of new programs, and pride will be on the line already!
